Shoreline Wine School lives inside Sip Wine Bar, a cozy twenty-four-seat room on Main Street in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. The school and the bar share an owner, a sommelier named Derrik who has built up an impressive stack of credentials: a WSET Diploma, Certified Sommelier status, an Italian Wine Scholar title, a Sherry specialization, a Valpolicella specialization, a German Wine Scholar designation in progress, and an application in to the Institute of Masters of Wine. That is a lot of wine knowledge for one person to bring to a small-town bar.

The school itself runs as a satellite of Commonwealth Wine School of Cambridge, Massachusetts, which holds the WSET accreditation and processes registrations for the Level 1 and 2 courses Shoreline offers. It is part of a small network Commonwealth has set up around New England, with a similar partner school in New Hampshire and Maine. The arrangement gives a coastal Connecticut town real access to a respected international wine credential, taught locally rather than over a long drive to Boston.

The most personal part of the business is the coaching Derrik offers on the side: private, one-on-one exam prep for both WSET and the Court of Master Sommeliers, priced by the week. CMS coaching runs from two hundred fifty dollars for four weeks of Introductory prep up to fifteen hundred for an eight-week Advanced Sommelier track. Commonwealth does not offer anything like it, which makes this corner of Shoreline’s business genuinely its own.

Round that out with staff training for local restaurants, private tastings, and an annual members’ trip (Napa, this year), and the picture is of a small, well-credentialed operation doing real work to bring serious wine education to a town that would otherwise have to travel for it.
