Washington Wine Schools

Washington is America’s second-largest wine-producing state, but its industry is built on something rarer than sunshine—education. Since the 1960s, research from Washington State University (WSU) has fueled the region’s transformation from experimental vineyards to a world-class wine region. WSU’s Viticulture and Enology Program, centered at the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates Wine Science Center in Richland, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees that combine vineyard science, winemaking, and sensory research. (wine.wsu.edu)

Hands-on training thrives at Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology & Viticulture, founded in 2000, and Yakima Valley College’s Viticulture & Enology Program, both of which maintain teaching wineries that supply talent to the state’s 1,000-plus wineries.

In the Seattle area, professional certification programs complement these academic paths. Spirited Grape (Issaquah) and Cellar Muse (Bellevue) are both WSET-approved program providers, offering Levels 1–3 in Wines and, in Cellar Muse’s case, Wine Scholar Guild certifications. Fine Vintage Ltd. also conducts WSET courses for Washington students through regional and online formats.

Together, Washington’s wine-education network—stretching from the Columbia Valley’s vineyards to Seattle’s tasting rooms—has made the state a national model for combining science, craft, and professional certification in wine.
