Connecticut’s modern wine industry began with the Connecticut Farm Winery Act of 1978, which encouraged small producers to bottle and sell their own wines. Today, more than 40 wineries line the state’s rolling hills, from the coastal vineyards of Stonington to the Litchfield Hills—and education has kept pace with that growth.
The University of Connecticut (UConn) College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources offers workshops and extension programs on cold-climate grape production, soil health, and integrated pest management, giving new vineyard owners the research base they need.
Connecticut also plays a pivotal role in American wine education. It is home to both the New England Wine Academy (NEWA)—a leading Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) program provider—and the corporate headquarters of WSET Americas, which oversees WSET operations throughout North and South America.
